Big Brother is Watching You

I encourage the citizens of Edgewater to keep careful watch on their elected representatives. I propose that we all become “Big Brother,” not as the phrase was originally intended by Orwell but instead turning it on its head and focusing our attention on the City Council. Many of our representatives have lived only a short time in the city and have precious little experience or understanding of our city’s charter.

The recent community survey reports that only 47% of us believe that Council acts in the best interest of the community. Why?

Get to know your Councilmen and check out a few meetings. You may discover that they are cut from the same cloth. There is virtually no diversity of opinion on Council. Nearly every vote is unanimous and follows a single “party line.” A diverse citizenry deserves elected officials who serve the city, not their personal political agenda. This one-party rule is most dramatically seen in the Council’s failure to support the Edgewater Police Department.

The recent survey reports that 50% of us want police to focus on general safety and 60% of us feel unsafe walking alone in the neighborhood. Yet this Council has failed to find the will to hire needed officers and retain our more experienced officers.  Why?
